Looking after our children’s Mental health and Wellbeing

At primary school age, children are developing the emotional and social foundations that will support them throughout life. Their mental health and wellbeing play a vital role in how they learn, build friendships, and cope with challenges. When children feel safe, valued, and supported, they are more confident, engaged, and ready to learn. As parents and educators, we can work together to create nurturing environments where children feel comfortable expressing their feelings and developing resilience. By prioritising wellbeing early on, we help set children up for long-term success both in and out of the classroom.

Tips for you to Support your child’s Wellbeing at Home

  • πŸ—£οΈ Talk regularly: Encourage your child to share how they’re feeling. Listen without judgment and reassure them that all feelings are okay.
  • πŸ›οΈ Establish routines: Consistent sleep, mealtimes, and downtime help children feel secure and balanced.
  • 🧸 Play together: Play is a powerful way for children to express emotions and build confidence.
  • 🌳 Get outside: Fresh air and physical activity support both mental and physical health.
  • 🎨 Encourage creativity: Drawing, music, and storytelling can help children process emotions.
  • πŸ’¬ Model calm and kindness: Children learn emotional regulation by watching how adults respond to stress.
  • 🧘 Teach simple coping strategies: Breathing exercises, quiet time, or a “calm corner” can help children

πŸ‚ Autumn 1 Curriculum Overview πŸ‚

This term, our classroom will be bursting with creativity, curiosity, and colourful learning adventures!

πŸ“š We are Writers πŸ“š

We’re diving into the magical world of The Rainbow Fish, a story that celebrates kindness and sharing. As we explore the book, children will be developing their writing skills, mastering capital letters, finger spaces, and full stops. We’ll be building our writing toolkit by revisiting key grammar concepts such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives, and using them to craft beautiful noun phrases and expanded descriptions that bring our ideas to life.

πŸ”’ We are Mathematicians πŸ”’

In maths, we’re strengthening our understanding of numbers up to 100. Children will be using place value charts, partitioning numbers, and working with number lines to deepen their number sense and confidence in working with two-digit numbers.

🌍 We are Geographers πŸŒ

Our geography topic takes us on a journey across the globe as we learn about the continents and oceans. We’ll be zooming in on Tromsø, a Nordic town in northern Europe, and comparing it to our own town of Atherstone. Through this comparison, children will explore physical and human features, discovering how places can be both similar and wonderfully different.

πŸ”¬ We are Scientists πŸ”¬

In science, we’re investigating living things and their habitats. Our budding scientists will be exploring microhabitats on the school field, conducting experiments to find out whether insects prefer sunny or shaded environments. It’s a hands-on way to learn about ecosystems and the needs of different creatures.

🎨 We are Artists πŸŽ¨

Inspired by our reading and science topics, our art lessons will focus on colour mixing and tinting techniques. Children will create stunning underwater creature collages, experimenting with shades and textures to bring their sea-inspired artwork to life.

Autumn 2 - Extraordinary Explorers!

This term, we have been on an exciting adventure, learning about the lives of four famous explorers and their contributions to world history.

We are writers!

In English this term, we have been learning to ask a range of questions and how to write them with the correct punctuation. We have been learning to write statements and how to join them together using conjunctions so that our sentences are longer and more interesting. We also learnt what a glossary is and how to use one correctly.

We are Mathematicians

In Maths we have completed our learning in addition and subtraction, including learning how to use the column method and we have been exploring the world of geometry in a fun and hands-on way! We have begun to recognize and name common 2D shapes like circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles, as well as 3D shapes such as cubes, spheres, and cylinders. We have also dived into the properties, counting sides, corners, faces, and edges, and discovering what makes each shape unique.  We have also started to understand symmetry by folding and drawing, noticing how some shapes look the same on both sides.

We are Historians!

In History, we had great fun learning about four famous explorers from the past - Sir Edmund Hillary, Sylvia Earle, Neil Armstrong and Ranulph Fiennes. We learnt how to find out about the past, how equipment used by explorers has changed over time, why

humans explore and all about their lives. We also completed a timeline for the life of Neil Armstrong.

We are Scientists

In Science, we have been learning all about materials and their properties. We went on a hunt to find examples of different materials in our environment, we sorted materials into groups, we investigated how some materials can change shape when you squash, bend or twist them and we also learnt where they come from. Finally, we tested materials to find out which were most suitable for a purpose.

We are Designers!

In Design and technology, we have had great fun designing and making a rocket based on the structure of Apollo 11. First we explored and evaluated Apollo 11 - watching videos and looking at photos, then we investigated different launching methods for our rockets. We then designed our rocket which needed to be launched into the air, made our rockets and finally had great fun testing them. We couldn't believe how far they flew into the air!
